After another swim stop at Monkey Beach, it was time to make your way to the north side of Phi Phi Ley island for the main event a sunset viewing. As we navigated around the island, the captain pointed out striking rock formations like the Viking Cave and Pilah Island, a towering stone spire jutting dramatically straight from the sea. You will be overwhelmed by the otherworldly landscape, like something from a fantasy novel rather than a real place on earth.
When they dropped anchor at our sunset viewpoint, the anticipation was palpable. Everyone sprang into position with cameras ready, eager to capture that iconic postcard-perfect shot. Then it began. At first, the sky transformed slowly, with soft pastel orange and pink streaks creeping in. But soon the colors intensified, morphing into vibrant hues of vermillion, tangerine and ruby red. We all stared, spellbound, as the sun sank closer to the horizon. Just as it was about to slip out of sight, the famous “green flash” appeared – a sudden emerald green burst caused by light refraction. A cheer rang out from my fellow tourists, celebrating this magical finale.
As daylight faded, Phi Phi Ley was bathed in an ethereal violet glow under the dusky sky. Watching the sunset from the deck of our gently bobbing boat, with the majestic island silhouetted all around, was an experience that transcended mere scenic beauty. Gazing out at that vista, you will fell a profound sense calm and contentment wash over me. The stresses and worries of everyday life melted away in those moments.
While the green flash may have been fleeting, the magic of that Phi Phi Island sunset stayed with me long after our tour ended. The kaleidoscope of colors in the sky reflecting off the dramatic landscapes is now seared into my memory.
